Question on AMEND Tax Return

I filed my taxes on January 21st. It was accepted by the IRS and is still processing today 02/27/2025. I claimed a college credit and would receive a $1,000 credit/refund on the return that I filed. I have since then received a document from my college that needs to be filed with my return, and I will lose and should not recieve the $1,000 credit/refund.

My question is, should I file an AMEND to the return now while the IRS is still processing the wrong return or should I wait and file the AMEND return after they have processed the return with the refund? I should not be receiving the refund, it was a mistake and I want to correct it but I am uncertain on when to file the AMEND return.

Any help is appreciated.

Wait until your return has been fully processed before you try to amend.   Amending while the IRS is still processing your original return can lead to confusion and long delays.

You should wait for the initial return to be completely processed before you file the amendment.

  • The IRS has been processing your return for a longer time than normal.
  • It may be because of the education credit.
  • Because it is taking an long time,
    • if you filed the amendment. it could be processed before the original.
    • This could make things very complicated.
