I just received a 1099G 2018 form in the mail on 1/31/2020. Although were filing for 2019, should I still input this information into Turbo Tax?

Depending on what payment to you the 2018 1099-G is representing, you will either need to file an amended 2018 tax return or ignore the 1099-G.

If the 1099-G has a figure in Box 1, Unemployment Insurance, you will need to file an amended return. Unemployment insurance is taxable income.

If the 1099-G has a figure in Box 2, State or local income tax refunds, credits, or offsets, then it is going to depend whether you filed with the Standard Deduction or Itemized Deductions on Sch A in the previous year, 2017.

If you took the Standard Deduction in 2017, you can ignore the 1099-G. If you took an Itemized Deduction on Schedule A in 2017 you are going to have to file an amended return for 2018.

If you have to amend your return, you will need to wait until the IRS has accepted your original return before filing the amendment. If you are to receive a refund, wait until you receive it before filing the amended return. If you owed the IRS money, then wait for your payment to clear.

For TurboTax Online, simply login to your account and select “Amend a return that was filed and accepted.” If you used our CD/download product, sign back into your return and select “Amend a filed return.

You can find out more about amending a return here. You can find out more about the 1099-G here.
