Receiving a federal refund but owe state taxes. Will state be automatically deducted from federal refund or from my bank account?

State taxes due cannot be deducted from a federal refund. If you've chosen direct debit for the state balance due (as you go through the FILE section for the state you should be asked about method of payment) it will come from your checking account, otherwise you will need to pay it by check or on your states website.
