Refund check received, but amended return shows no refund due.

I need to file an amended return for 2024 because a 1099 showed up after I had mailed my tax return. I waited to file an amended return until I received the small refund check, which was received today. The amended tax return shows zero refund due to me, and zero tax due to IRS. What do I do with the refund check I received?

Does the amended tax return take into account the original refund?  What I mean is - you said that you owe zero dollars.  Does the 1040-X show the refund from the original return on line 18?  And then zero on line 20?  Or is line 18 zero as well?

If line 18 shows the original refund amount then you are all good.  Deposit the check and file the return.

If line 18 is zero then you owe that money back to the IRS.  The best way to handle that is to deposit the IRS check and make a payment to them for the exact same amount.
