Question

Refund status and Review letter

I received a review letter from the IRS for a 60 day review before they will send my refund. I checked IRS.GOV for the status of my refund and it says that the check was sent 10 days ago. I have not received the check but did receive the review letter. Is the website incorrect, or should I accept the letter as the most current update on my refund?

If the Where's My Refund tool on the IRS website states your refund check was mailed, then you should receive it within 14 business days. As far as the review, you would need to contact the IRS for further assistance regarding that matter. Their phone number is 800-829-1040. When calling, be sure to have the following:

  • Your Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number
  • Your filing status (Single, Head of Household, Married Filing Joint, or Married Filing Separate)
  • Your prior-year tax return (they may ask you questions from it to verify your identity)
  • A copy of the tax return you’re calling about
  • Any letters they may have sent you
  • Paper and pen to take notes—make sure to write down the day you called and the name and ID number of the agent you spoke to, as well as any instructions or deadlines you were given.

Please note: It may take over an hour to get your call answered as the IRS lines are busy at this time of year.
