Rejected return

The IRS rejected my return for the following reason:

A Dependent SSN in the return must not be the same as the Primary or Spouse SSN on another return where 'PrimaryClaimAsDependentInd' or 'SpouseClaimAsDependentInd' is not checked.

Can you tell me what "another return" means or where I might find the 'PrimaryClaimAsDependentInd' or 'SpouseClaimAsDependentInd' that is not checked?

Ask your kid if they filed a return as  they may have made an error and did NOT indicate that they are YOUR dependent ... look at their return and if they did make the mistake (aside from forbidding them from filing a return before yours in the future) then you will need to mail in your return and they need to amend theirs.  You can mail in your return now ... you don't need to wait for them.

Now if it was not your child then all you can do is mail in the return to claim the dependent as someone either by mistake or design has already used their SS# on a return.
