The IRS compares the last 4 digits of the SSN to the first 4 letters of your last name. The must match what Social Security has on file for you. Did you change your last name?

You cannot overcome a rejection for a SSN.  Someone else may have accidentally used your SSN and filed first.  The IRS will not accept another return using that SSN  unless you file by mail and let them sort out the duplicate use of the SSN.  Print, sign and date your return in ink, and mail it in.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

If you can’t resolve it mail your return.
