If the IRS encounters any problem sending the direct deposit, they change it to a check sent by mail. They don't spend any time trying to figure out why the direct deposit didn't work, or trying to make it work. Also, they will not send more than three direct deposit refunds to the same bank account. Any additional refunds are sent by mail.

In any case, there's nothing you can do about it at this point, so just wait for the check to come in the mail.

You could try asking your bank whether they rejected the direct deposit, and if so, why. That might help you figure out what went wrong and possibly correct it for next year. But it's possible that the direct deposit never got to your bank. If you talk to someone at the bank, also ask them what the correct routing number is for direct deposits, and make sure you entered it correctly. Also double-check the account number that you entered.

my account number is correct...could it be that the refund amount was too much to be deposited?

Finally got notified by the usps i had mail to be delivered from the IRS. We to had DD set up but for some reason the IRS said it would be mailed. The USPS is showing two separate pieces of mail, one in mine and one in my husbands name. Did any of you encounter this same thing filing jointly?

If it’s a letter with the IRS logo on it, it’s not your refund. Checks will be in an envelope marked as Department of the Treasury. More than likely your return has an error on it if your getting two letters.

I have always filed electronic and did direct deposit. Except this year I mailed my return but still put my direct deposit Information on the form. Checked the status and it said check being mailed. Called the IRS and they claim they didnt see my checking account information in the system so I will be getting a check..hopefully!!

I too had my refund of around $2,000.00 mailed instead of direct deposited as it had been for the last many years.  I talked to an IRS agent and the only thing he could think of that may have caused it was that they changed the 1040 form and maybe that is why.  Makes sense.

I was told by tt is is because of the large amount. That the irs changed it this year. I had no issues last year either. I also know that when you call the irs, most of the people you talk to are clueless. It took me 10 months and about 15 phone calls until I actually had a gentleman at the IRS find out an issue I was having in the past. He apologized alot for the IRS and for nobody actually getting me a correct answer for 10 months.

If your return was accepted less than 21 days ago, hang in there. It can take anywhere from a few days to 3 weeks to go from acceptance to approval.

Where is my refund

February 27, 2020

Did anyone receive their direct deposit after posting their questions? Mine this year was over 10K and it says it’s set to be mailed 2/28 but I selected direct deposit. Just curious if anyone received their DD last year after receiving the message that it was going to be mailed???

The person who always has done my taxes in the past said it will be mailed. Sounds like in the last 10 months the IRS changed their rules and never informed anyone. The post office said with that date we should get it next week. I actually had an amended return from last year that was sent out last Friday and I received it Wednesday. Hope that helps.

I'm having my federal return direct deposited to my bank account, and would like my NY state refund to also be direct deposited, but when I printed out copies of my returns, I was told that the State refund would be in the form of a check. I'd like to submit my bank account information, but was unable to change it in the software.

@Nana47 Upon completion of filing, there is no way to change any banking information unfortunately.  There could be other reasons that your state is sending you a check vs directly depositing your refund. To find out why you will need to reach out to them directly: NY Dept of Revenue

Trying to add my routing number so my refund can be direct deposit

April 3, 2020

If you selected to mail your return, you would first need to change from mail to e-file. Then you can use the link provided below to easily add your bank's routing or account number for direct deposit:

Where do I enter my bank's routing or account number

@jenniferstoute Sorry--you cannot change it if you already filed your tax return.

Did you already e-file?  If you did NOT e-file you can go to the FILE section and change how you want to receive your refund.

Once a return has been accepted by the IRS you cannot change how you want to receive your refund.
