Question

Should I amend my tax return now that there's $10,200 untaxed in unemployment and if I were to do so would the amount in the top left be only new income?

I just checked out amending my taxes and I haven't ever done it before so I was just wondering if the new state and federal amount is overall between the two filings or if it just counts what I would be getting now on top of that. So what I'm asking is really if refiling will take away money or only give me more at this point.

No, you do not need to amend your return to exclude the unemployment unless the calculations make you newly eligible for additional federal credits and deductions not already included on the original tax return. Otherwise, the IRS will make the adjustment automatically. Please see IRS to recalculate taxes on unemployment benefits; refunds to start in May for details.

Generally, if you start an amended return your refund. balance due will start will $0 and then when you make changes the refund/balance due changes. Therefore, if it shows a refund then it will be on top of what was shown on your original return. If it shows a balance due then you will have to pay money back.
