Question

Should I try to cancel and repay my Indiana state taxes due after accidentally paying as an it40-es instead of an it-40?

The IT40-es is to pay estimated taxes.  This is not the same as filing a tax return.  If you did not pay any money with the IT-40-ES you can just file your Indiana return without referring to the IT-40-ES.

If you paid money with the estimated taxes, you will put that into TurboTax and it will be a credit toward your 2020 return.  You will make the change on your federal tax return.

If you filed an estimated tax return for 2021 taxes, then you need to contact the state taxation department for how to claim the payment on 2020, or if it can be reimbursed, or if you will need to claim it on 2021 taxes.

At the bottom of the Indiana Department of Taxation page there are telephone, live chat and email contact options.
