Using TurboTax, when a federal tax return is e-filed and there is a federal tax refund and the user selects to have the tax refund Direct Deposited, the bank routing and account numbers entered by the user are sent with the e-filed federal tax return to the IRS.  The IRS receives the Direct Deposit information and deposits the federal tax refund into the account selected by the user.

This is the same procedure for Direct Deposit for every tax year since e-filing began over twenty years ago.

Only you can do that.  You either pick to get your refund as a check or as Direct Deposit.  Or it can go on a card.  If you have the fees deducted from your refund you have to use Direct Deposit.
