If your direct deposit is rejected at the bank, the rejection will be reported back to the IRS. The IRS will then automatically convert the refund to a check, which will be mailed to the address on the return.

You really don't need to contact the IRS if your address is correct. The direct deposit attempt cannot be stopped, and the conversion to a paper check occurs automatically.

Overall, it will delay the refund process about 1.5 weeks.
