Question

The IRS recently said that you didn't have to claim $10,200 of unemployment I received in 2020 due to the pandemic, can or should i amend it? Its pending a refund date?

I filed on Feb 11th, it was accepted, but it has been pending ever since. I did claim the child tax credit and earned income credit. I have received no notice of an error or a problem with anything? I don't know what the hold up is.

If you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC), The IRS just started issuing refunds the first week of March if:

  • You file your return online
  • You choose to get your refund by direct deposit
  • The IRS found no issues with your return

Additionally, your financial institution may need time to accept your direct deposit or issue a debit card. Many institutions don’t process payments on weekends or holidays. So, if you file early, be aware of federal and local holidays that may affect how soon you get your refund.

You can check the status of your refund by going to the IRS Refunds page. Click on the Check My Refund Status link or download the IRS2Go app for your mobile device.

Regarding the unemployment benefits changes, if you have already filed your return, the IRS has stressed to NOT amend at this time. We do not yet have updated guidance for those who have filed their returns.  Please see this TurboTax Help article:  How do I get the new unemployment benefits if I’ve already filed my taxes?  It contains the latest information and contains a link for you to sign up to be notified when changes occur.
