I filed my taxes around the end of January 2020. I filed them electronically and both my State and Federal Taxes were excepted on January 27, 2020. My issue is that I recieved a letter from the IRS for me to proove my identity so i called the phone number listed on the letter I recieved and then had to make an appointment with the IRS for a face to face interview. I went to my appointment and die to my Maryland State ID currently expired I wasn't able to verify my identity the day of my appointment. I was told for me to get the documents i need then goto the MVA to update my ID then for me to make another appointment with the IRS. I then had to apply for a replacement Birth Certificate and replacement Social Security Card and as soon as i recieved them both i instantly called the MVA and scheduled an appointment with them for me to have my Maryland State ID renewed. Unfortunately my appointment was cancelled with the MVA due to current Pandemic we are currently facing, COVID-19. With that being said, all I need to do is verify my identity with the IRS for them to finally issue me my Federal Tax Refund via direct deposit. Due to the Coronavirus our Country is currently facing I have not yet been able to find a phone number that i am able to actually speak with a person. Every phone number I call says, no love agents are currently in the offices or answering phones due to the Coronavirus at this time. All I am trying to do is to receive my federal tax check and in can not yet do that until my identity is verified. I can not verify my identity without renewing my expired Identification Card. Please if there is anyway you could possibly help me please help me! I don't know how I am able to verify my identity for the IRS to send me my Federal Refund! I was wondering if I can possibly fax the IRS the documents they will need to verify my identity????

How Do I Comply With Verification?

The IRS offers only two ways to verify your identity:

Online at the IRS Identity Verification Service website
By phone at the toll-free number listed on your 5071C Letter

Only those who receive a 5071C Letter should use the verification system. The letters are sent to you via U.S. mail. They are never emailed, and the IRS does not initiate verification requests by phone.

The IRS prefers that taxpayers use the online system; because phone callers may experience delays due to the high volume of calls the IRS receives. The phone number on your letter can be used only for verification purposes, not for any other tax issues.

How Will I Be Asked to Verify My Identity?

The ID Verify website or phone system asks questions that only you can answer correctly. What you will need:

Your previous year’s tax return
Your current year’s tax return
All supporting forms and schedules

I did not file taxes in 2018. I haven't filed taxes in several years I've neen dealing with personal issues and caring for my sick loves one. With that said i have a two year old son that i am a si gle mother to and i worked in 2019 amd filed my taxes. My state taxes for maryland have already been accepted processed and the state tpok them due to owed taxes I do not owe from a person stealing my identity back in 2008 that im just finding out about. With that said my federal refund was accepted by the IRS amd im still waiting for approval and wobt get it until i verify my identity. I have already called every number possible duevto the COVID19 shutdown i cant speak to a live person anywhere. I meed my taxes i am a single mother going thru this Pandemic like everyone else. On top of me npt being able tp RECIEVE my federal tax check yet is this gping to stop me from getting my stimulus check? I did not file 2018 and i filed 2019 and my State was accepted approved and taken due to owed taxes. My Federal refund still says its been accepted thats it.

First for the identity verification issue. I recommend contacting your local Taxpayer Advocate. Currently, Taxpayer Advocacy Service remains open to receive phone calls at the local phone numbers, but has suspended walk-in services in their offices and their toll-free centralized number is unavailable until further notice.

Please visit taxpayeradvocate.irs.gov to locate your local office phone number.

You 2019 filed tax return will be used to qualify you for the stimulus payment.

How is this marks as solved. We’re you able to verify? I’m in the same exact position and was furloughed from my job and currently aren’t accepted for unemployment benefits. I haven’t received my stimulus because my taxes haven’t been fully processed do to the identity verification. I also didn’t file for 2018. So I have received neither check and need it.

It is not at all solved!!!! Im in the same situation as in I did not file for 2018 and due to me not being able to verify my identity I still habe recieved my taxes i filed back in January nor am i going to receive a Stimulus Check either because my federal taxes still say they are being processed so my stimulus check can not be sent to me. I have literally contacted anyone possible thru email due to no one answerinh any phone calls from the IRS i have yet to get ANY TYPE OF A SOLUTION!!!! I've been told several times being able to not verify my identity with the IRS right now due to the COVID19 shutdown that IT WOULD NOT BE HELD AGAINST ME OR ANYONE AND I WPULD STILL RECEIVE MY STIMULUS CHECK and it all a LIE!!!! I don't know What else to do! Please can anyone help me and everyone that's going thru these issues give us some type of REAL ANSWERS!!!! Please, I am a single mother and struggling I need my tax money!!!!

I’m having the same problem contacted tax advocate and they are closed to the public as well and I can’t receive my stimulus payment until my identity is verified as well I am facing a eviction I don’t receive public assistance so me and my 4 are In a F situation and I have tried every account number I have ever had.

I know it's terrible! And the worst part of it all is the IRS knows how many people it is out here that haven't been able to not only recieve their tax checks but now cant even get the stimulus checks they are issuing to mostly everyone and after all this time the IRS still has not came up with not one solution for us!! Is it that hard to at least open up a phone number we can call that only handles verifying people's identity or why can't they give us the option to possibly fax or email them copies of whatever they need to verify whine are so we can get our tax checks....its so dam sad the person that stole my identity was able to get money from the IRS in MY NQME AND THAT WAS MY TAX MONEY BUT YET I CANT GET MY OWN TAX CHECK that i worked for!!

Feb25th- IRS WMR tool says “processing TaxTopic 152”

March 15- I received 5071C letter requesting me to “confirm identity”. FYI: ID verification line off due to IRS not accepting calls SO had to go create acct with IRS To complete process online. This requires many documents and a request code to confirm identity. I did this same day I received my letter and they mailed it….took half a month to get code.

April 13- Got code In mail to confirm identity. (Took a month to get) Online, I completed the ID verification process. (Says it will take up to 9 weeks to process taxes & I can check refund status in 2-3 weeks)

April 27th- Still waiting on my refund status to change on “Where’s My Refund” tool. It displays the same thing it did before I confirmed identity. “Processing Tax Topic 152

I'm going through the exact same thing where I can't prove my identity to people that are not currently in the office. I also don't understand why you can only do it online if you have a mortgage, credit card or other ridiculous ways that alot of common ppl don't have. I've even looked for someone to email but that's hopeless 😔. It's like they don't care at all about the ppl who like me had appts( my appt April7,2020) but they closed. I was told on the day they were closing by s IRS rep that due to the shut down,his Mngr said that a field agent would get in touch with me... Never happened!!! There has to be someone out their to help us.. Also as for tax advocates they refer us too,their closed as well.

OMG, I’M NOT ALONE!

I was seriously feeling so alone in this FRUSTRATING, HAIR-PULLING, SANITY-DEPLETING situation!!!!

I am legitimately going through exactly what you all are suffering from and I just wanna say first that I am so sorry you are all experiencing this type of mistreatment.

I haven’t filed in several years. However, last year I got a job at Macy’s and made a good amount of income by the start of 2020. I got my W-2 and decided to get my taxes taken care of (I was ACTUALLY kinda EXCITED, even, to do my taxes!! To me, it was GREAT working again - I missed it! I missed being able to be a responsible adult... like I used to be).

Anyways, I filed my taxes in January and got the 507 whatever notice in the mail in late February. They said I had a month to respond. I tried calling the number(s). It rang and rang and rang and rang and rang and said they were too busy and hung up (or something like that but point is, I couldn’t get through). At some point they shut down the phone lines all together. Now I have no option to call. One of the first things I did was try to do it online. Well, you NEED a credit card, mortgage, student loan, auto loan, — Blah blah blah except I have NONE OF THESE! If you can’t do it online they say to call. ... we already went over that .... (can’t call) so the only other option is in person ....(not doing that either). Oh and they aren’t even accepting paper mail so anything mailed to them in the last couple months probably hasn’t even been opened and if it has they likely will take forever.

I've honestly come up with the conclusion that my MISTAKE...was freaking FILING TAXES & DOING WHAT I THOUGHT WAS THE RIGHT THING TO DO! Seriously, If I didn’t do that and just not filed any taxes (even though I had income), I WOULD HAVE THE $1200 STIMULUS MONEY RIGHT NOW!!!

... JUST LIKE MY UNEMPLOYED, NON-CONTRIBUTING DRUG ADDICTED SISTER & MY 'HASN’T WORKED OR FILED TAXES IN 6 YEARS BUT STILL GOT HIS MONEY ON DAY 1' LITTLE BROTHER!!

MY MISTAKE WAS DOING MY TAXES. BOTTOM LINE. Can you believe that?? I am so frustrated I could scream! This is NOT RIGHT!!

I'm telling you guys we need to start some kind of , website or forum against IRS. I mean it's ridiculous that they just close and leave us all out in the cold. Then by the time they get back in the office and we actually get to prove our identity to them, it's probably going to be tax time again!!! Seriously.?? Someone has to wake up and see that we don't get our income tax,which means we don't get Stimulus check either. TOTAL BULL****.....

I really thought I was going thru this on my own. The only info I can give you guys will be to go to your senators website. Fill out privacy form and attach a brief yet detailed letter of what’s going on. Good luck y’all.

I know its absolutely insane how many people are going thru the same exact thing! But i sincerely appreciate your suggestion! I've already emailed everyone i could possibly think of including the Govenor but I'll email the Senator right now! Thanks again! Oh and just curious....after you sent your email have you recieved any type of response back? If so did it take long for a response back?

Still haven’t heard anything and I was so hopefully I’d at least have a Direct deposite date 9 weeks after and here it is 12 weeks after and not even changed from processing claim showing up on WMR tool. Just been waiting since feb and can’t do anything but wait...

I think it is really sad that tax paying people like us can't find a easier way to verify our identity so we can receive our refunds and stimulus checks but, at the same time millions of deceased people are receiving there stimulus check.

i cant get my identity verified. I have my birth certicate, tax returns, marraige cerificate. I just dint have a id. How can I get my identity verified. I have to also get my unemployment verified and Im at a lose on what to do. Can u please help

If you received a letter from the IRS to verify your identity, see Identity Verification for IRS Letter Recipients. You should be able to do it online. but the IRS phone number is also included.

If this does not apply, please provide more details- why do you need your identity verified?
