What do I do if I forgot my husbands taxes

My husband hadn’t received his w2 yet but I filed my taxes already is that a problem

The IRS will start processing returns onJ an 23 Until then TurboTax will hold your pending e-filed return. Pending returns can not be changed. If your return is accepted you will get an email. If the return is rejected the e-mail will tell you what to correct and you can make changes before

Did you click that big orange button that said “Transmit my return now?” If you did that, you cannot do anything to fix it yet. You have to wait for the email that tells you if your return was accepted or rejected.

You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it. It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner. The IRS does not allow you to take it back.

If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.” The changes will go nowhere.

Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return. If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.

If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund. THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally. You will need to use a form called a 1040X.

Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself. Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed

Assuming you are filing a Married Filing Jointly, yes, that is a problem since all income your husband received would need to be entered on the joint return.

The IRS gets copies of all W-2's that are issued and there is a good chance that the IRS will add the numbers from that W-2 onto your return for you.

IF THAT HAPPENS, the IRS will send you a letter asking if you agree to the adjustment, and if you do, that will be all you need to do (other than pay any additional tax that might be owed). It will all be explained in the IRS letter.

IF THE IRS DOES NOT CORRECT YOUR RETURN FOR YOU, you will need to file and amended return (1040X). TurboTax can help you do that if needed.

For now, wait until

a) The IRS sends you a letter regarding the change

OR

b) The IRS processes your original return without making the change

If you need to pay additional tax, be sure to do that before "Tax Day" which will be April 18th, 2023.

If for some reason your return is rejected, it will be as if you never tried to file and you can continue the return as if nothing happened.
