It should not cost you anything to amend unless whatever you are changing requires you to upgrade to a higher version of the software. If you cannot afford to pay for the upgrade now, you have three years to amend a tax return and still get the refund, so you can wait awhile. Or you can get the form 1040X and prepare it by hand for the price of the stamps to mail it in.
