That indicates your taxes were overpaid in a previous year and the IRS is informing you that they have applied the overpayment to a different tax year for which a payment was still due.

The letter received from the IRS should explain exactly what they are needing from you.

 

The actual notice or letter number should be in the upper right of the first page usually preceded by either a CP or LTR.  What is that prefix and number?

I'm at work and saw it coming to my mail. Initially I had a refund and filed to early and realized I missed adding some items which resulted in me having to pay more after amending my tax return. I received my refund but then paid it back a good portion of it. I wonder if that is what the letter is referring to? 

 

I did check my IRS portal and it says i'm up to date with all my payments.
