What should I do if I need to amend my taxes and remove a dependent but have not received my refund yet when I would owe the its?

I need to remove my son so his father can claim him on his taxes since I accidentally claimed him but have not received my return yet and turbo tax is saying I will immediately have to pay the IRS over 4,000 that I do not have. Should I wait to amend mine?

Wait until you receive your refund to start your amended return.  It is possible that the IRS will make changes to your tax return.

Hopefully, you will receive your refund and be able to make full payment.

See this TurboTax Help.

As long as your son's Social Security number is reported on the IRS files as belonging on your tax return, your son's father will not be able to electronically file and claim your son.  The amendment process will 'release' your son's Social Security number.

@ashley-lowry9575

Form 1040-X assumes you got, or will get, the refund from original 1040.

so you do not have to wait.

If original refund is not on 1040-X line 18, that could be why you owe a lot of money.

Note: if you are changing dependents, you will not be able to e-File 1040-X.

You'll have to file on paper.

The other parent will also have to file on paper.

See IRS Instructions for Form 1040-X   for how to assemble and mail an amendment.

Do not include your old 1040 nor your revised 1040 because the Form 1040-X reflects any changes there and becomes your new tax return.

----

Rather than all this, maybe you and the other parent can come to some agreement on exchange of cash.

Note: IRS is backed up until Dec 2022 with the current outstanding paper returns waiting to be processed.

@fanfare I have not amended it yet. But my original filling due to it having a dependent on it qualified me for over 4k and I have not received my original refund yet so therefore taking the dependent off it shows I will owe them the amount I qualified for through a dependent.
