What year to add income from state refund check?

I filed my 2015 taxes late, but received a refund.  My 2015 state refund check wasn't sent to me until 2018. Turbotax is trying to include that income on my 2016 taxes.  Should I instead include it on my 2018 taxes?

Yes - you should include it in your 2018 taxes since that's the year you received it.  You will be able to indicate the tax year of the refund on the screen, Tell Us About Your Refund.

To enter your state refund, reported to you on Form 1099-G, please follow these steps:

  1. Click on Federal Taxes > Wages & Income  > I'll choose what I work on
  2. In the 1099-MISC and Other Common Income section, click on the Start/Update box next to State and Local Tax  Refunds on Form 1099-G.
  3. On the screen, Did You Get a State or Local Tax Refund Last Year? click the Yes box.
