Question

When I try to print my state return (must file by mail), the only thing that prints is the File by Mail Instructions, not the actual return.

When you attempted to download the forms for printing, did you choose to download all forms and worksheets?

I did, and I get the complete Federal Return, and just the File by Mail instruction page for state.

I will offer you a different set of print instructions and you can see if they will provide you with your state return.

To print/download your state return after choosing to file your return by mail, you will need to get back into the tax preparation to do this, to do so, follow the instructions below:

  •     Log in to your TurboTax Online account
  •     Click on My TurboTax at the top of the page
  •     Click on My Tax Timeline
  •     Under Some Things You Can Do (below your 2016 return statuses), click on Add a State (you will not prepare a state return, this just gets you back into the return to download your amended return)
  •     Once you are in your return click on My Account
  •     Click on Print Center  to view/print/download the state return and filing instructions

This gives me my Federal Return, with last page being the State File by Mail Instructions...

@sj1600 For instructions on printing only your state tax return you may print/download it , along with any other instructions or forms that were included in your return, from your tax timeline.  Follow the instructions listed in this following TurboTax FAQ, but instead of clicking to download your .PDF file or .TAX file,  select to Download all forms and worksheets.  This way you can select which pages to print from your computer.

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account
  2. Click on Tax Home
  3. Scroll to bottom of page
  4. Click on Add a State (this just gets you back in)
  5. Click on Tax tools (left menu)
  6. Click on Print Center
  7. Click on Print, save or preview this year's return
  8. Put a check mark in the box for Federal Returns and State Returns (if you have one, or more).
  9. Click Include government and TurboTax worksheets
  10. Click View or print forms
  11. A new window will open that will give you the option to download and/or print.   This will include all forms and worksheets, including vouchers.

The below TurboTax FAQ, is another option to view or print your documents:

How do I get a copy of a return I filed this year in TurboTax Online?

I'm having the same problem. After preparing Federal and State (Michigan) returns for myself and my spouse, I started a new file for my 16 year-old son. The only "income" he has is Social Security, and the system shows that he owes $0 for both Federal and State. Problem is, when I select 'File' (upper left corner of the page) and then 'Print' and try to preview each document listed under State, the State return itself doesn't appear - but the filing by mail instructions do. This is the first time I've used Turbo Tax (Deluxe) - what am I doing wrong?

If the State Return is checked on the Form Selection page, you should have options at the bottom 'Save as PDF' and 'Preview Print Copy.

Can you save it as a PDF?

Thanks for the quick reply.

I have tried the procedure you suggested again, but still the actual return (Form MI-1040) does not appear on the list - only the Filing By Mail instructions.

After looking through previous year returns for my son done on Turbo Tax for us by a friend of mine, we have always received a Federal return but never have received a State return for him to file - only the instructions. So, I'm beginning to think he doesn't have to file one after all - but it would be nice if Turbo Tax told me that during Review.
