There are a number of reasons the IRS would send you a 4883c letter, to include selecting you at random.

It may also be to confirm you are a real person, to confirm your identity, or to confirm the tax forms you reported are valid and accurate.

For whatever reason you were selected, they won't process your return until you comply with the letter.

I've tried multiple times to respond, following the procedure called for in my 4883C letter, and the phone line repeatedly says the IRS can't handle the call volume. The date I was supposed to have complied by is past now. I feel stuck.

Yes, the IRS is experiencing heavy call volume. They will not proceed until you are able to fulfil the terms of the letter you received.

Individuals can call the IRS at (800) 829-1040, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. your local time.

Here are some tips when contacting the IRS:

  • First choose your language
  • Then do not choose the first choice regarding REFUND, or it will send you to an automated phone line.
  • Instead, press 2 for personal income tax questions.
  • Then press 1 for form, tax history, or payment.
  • Then press 3 for all other questions.
  • Then press 2 for all other questions to be transferred to an agent
