IRS incorrectly sent my 2nd stimulus to a closed account when it was supposed to send it to my account on record with SSA- So I was forced to file a tax return. I filed Feb 12th 2021. 21 Days came and went -- Friday, when the first of the 3rd stimulus payments started going out, I got a message that my return was changed from the $600 I was due when i claimed the rebate to claim my 2nd stimulus to $0 . IRS incorrectly change my refund amount so i cant get my 2nd stimulus. Is this legal ? How do I fight it? And now the portal says this for my 3rd payment-- am I getting screwed again?!?!? And before you ask yes I got the 1444-B letter stating they did a direct deposit. Called that bank with the closed account and was told they reversed it back.

We are unable to provide you with the status of your payment or perform the action requested because:

  • The tax return information you entered does not match our records; or
  • You have already accessed the system the maximum number of times today.

Please come back after 24 hours and try again.

I know what my social security number is, I know what my refund was , and I **bleep** sure know my address. And I only checked once today. So this system is broken and causing people to worry about their payments.

I dont want to sit here in bad financial shape like everyone else without a penny of the stimulus i am entitled to. This is getting real old.

Please advise

Please be aware, if you received Notice 1444 in the mail but have not received your payment as mentioned in the notice, then you need to request a trace to be able to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax return. Otherwise the IRS will just adjust the Credit according to their records. Please see How do I request a payment trace to track my first or second Economic Impact Payments?
