Why did we have to pay extra to get our refund back sooner when it's taking at least a month and a half to actually get them back.

There is no option or charge to have the refund processed by the IRS in an expedited manner. No tax preparation software company can offer that type of option since it does not exist. Only the IRS controls when and if a tax refund is sent back to the taxpayer.
If you are referring to the Refund Processing Service with a fee of $34.99, that option is only available to have the TurboTax account fees deducted from the federal tax refund instead of paying the TurboTax account fees with a credit or debit card.
