It says my state return was ready to mail. What's that mean?

What is the "it"?    Are you referring to the TurboTax Tax Home?

If the status of your state return when looking at the Tax Home says "ready to mail", that means it has not been efiled.    Did you try to efile but didn't go all the way to a screen with a big orange button that says "Transmit Return Now?"

It sounds like TurboTax thinks you planned to print and postal mail the return.  If that's not what you wanted to do, then as long as you haven't already mailed it, you can go back into your return to the FILE section and change the filing method from mail to efile.  Then proceed to fully transmit the return.  If that's your situation and what you want do, then here's how:

NOTE:   If you efiled the Federal return first, you can't efile the state return until after the Federal return has been accepted.    If your Federal return was efiled and accepted previously, then here's how to go back in and efile the state return:

    • Log into your account, and at the Tax Home your return interview is probably closed if TurboTax thinks you were finished.   In that case, to open the interview back up look for a link "Add a State."
    • Click on "Add a State."  (That doesn't really add one; that's just to open the return.)
    • Once the return interview is open, go through the REVIEW section again to be sure everything is still in order.
    • Then go to the FILE section, progress through the screens there, and change the filing method for the state return to efile.
    • Then continue on answering all the remaining screens and at the final step click a big orange button "Transmit Returns Now."
