    For the year that a spouse passed away, you can file a joint return and get the married filing jointly standard deduction.    For the following two years IF you have a qualifying child dependent, you can file as a Qualifying Surviving Spouse and get that same MFJ standard deduction amount.    If you do not have a qualifying dependent, then you file Single, and have a lower standard deduction.
