Question

Why does TurboTax not show that I filed 2018? The IRS has it, and I have emails thanking me for filing

I filed my 2018 returns back in April. I have email stating thank you for filing and that they were accepted. The IRS has the information on their website. but every time I open TurboTax it prompts me

EITHER ...

You used the downloaded version and you are looking for it online by mistake ...

If you used the desktop CD/Download editions installed on your computer, the only copy of your tax data file and any PDF's will be on the computer where the return was created.  TurboTax does not store online any returns completed using the desktop editions.

OR

You are not logging in correctly ...

You have to sign onto your online account using the exact same user ID you used to create the account.

Close all TurboTax windows on your web browser (including this one).  Copy and paste the account recovery website link onto a new web browser window and run the tool.

Use this TurboTax account recovery website to get a list of all the user ID's for an email address.  Run the tool against any email addresses you may have used - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/account-recovery

If none of the user ID's received will access your account, then use the option shown in blue on the account recovery website, "Try something else"

Unless this was something that changed only for the 2018 tax season oh, that is not the case. I've been using TurboTax for years and every other years tax return is online. And every year I use the CD on my computer.

@Steve12768 You are confused.  TurboTax does not keep copies or tax files online for tax returns that you prepared using desktop software.  If you use desktop software installed from a CD or downloaded to your hard drive, then the only place those files are stored is on your own hard drive on whatever backup device you used like a flash drive.  They are not stored online in a TurboTax account.

Only returns prepared using online TurboTax software are stored online in a TT account.  You may have an account from which you have purchased the software and downloaded it, but the tax files are not stored there, nor will the online account show anything about the results of the returns you prepared and filed.

I believe it is important to point this out so that any other users who read this thread do not have unrealistic/incorrect  expectations of what will happen with their returns and tax files.
