On April 19th, I received a message from TurboTax that my federal return was accepted.  It's May 3rd and my irs account only says it was received.

'accepted' is similar to the idea that the mail room received the return in  a physical world and a few rudimentary checks (e.g. SS# and last name match) have been conducted.  I agree it is a bad work to use as it does infer that all is good and the refund will be shortly on its way, but that overreaches how the word is being used by the IRS.  it is a IRS word used in other software packages as well; it's not just TT that uses that word.

ACCEPTED is standard English for a hand-off.

Your tax return is now in the hands of the IRS.

it is the opposite of REJECTED.

This should be obvious.
