Why has my state check come before my federal return was direct deposited?

This is because the IRS and each state handles it's own returns.The state can start processing your return once the IRS accepts your federal.

For your federal return, if it was accepted less than 21 days ago, hang in there. It can take anywhere from a few days to 3 weeks to go from acceptance to approval.
