Most returns will be in pending until the IRS begins to accept/reject e-files on January 29.

I filed on 2/4/25 and it still says pending. Why would it take so long to be accepted or rejected.

There could be a couple of reasons why you might be experiencing a delay:

    1. First, the status might be pending for security reasons. This may be a sign that someone is trying to use your identity to file a tax return. This can take up to 72 hours, after which your return will then be forwarded to the IRS, or if applicable, rejected. If rejected, you can then correct the rejection issue and resubmit. Please see this FAQ for reference.

    2. Secondly, there could be a delay if your return has various refundable credits, such as the Earned Income Credit, Investment Credit, Energy Credits, or Business Credits. You may need to wait a few more days and check your filing status again. Please see this FAQ for additional information.

Note: Both instances may be applicable. That is, you could have a hold for security reasons first. And additionally for verification of the refundable credits in your return. In this case, delays might extend beyond 72 hours.

Additionally, if you have Form 5695 and claiming joint occupancy, the IRS will not be accepting these returns until 3/16/25. You can see this on this IRS site. The language you see below is from Row 39 of the Tax Year 2024 spreadsheet.

Taxpayers claiming Joint Occupancy on Form 5695 will have to file via paper if filing their return before the Form 5695 schema is updated in mid-March. This temporary limitation should only impact a subsection of Form 5695 filers.  For a preview of the TY24 draft form and instructions for Form 5695, please see the Draft tax forms on IRS.gov at https://www.irs.gov/draft-tax-forms. Submission of Forms 5695 that do not claim Joint Occupancy may be e-filed at the start of Processing Year 2025

The IRS is not officially accepting returns until January 29. Please see the TurboTax FAQ What does "Pending" mean? for additional information.

Once your return is filed, TurboTax has no control over the processing of your return or the release of your refund.

Here are a couple FAQs to track your refund:
When will I get my federal tax refund?
How do I track my state refund?
Why does Where's My Refund say "approved" but TurboTax still says "accepted"?

Why do some refunds take longer than others?

What if my IRS refund is taking longer than 21 days?

    **UPDATE ON WHY PENDING STATUS**

Like many users, I have been using Turbo Tax for Years and as always once I file both FEDERAL AND STATE, not long after I get a notification thats accepted. However this year is different, I bought a EV last year dec2024 and it was a private sale. I initially thought I could still get the tax credit but that turned out to be not true. So that was the reason why I had a pending status from the 1/28/25 until today Where I got notified that IRS did not have this EV as a clean vehicle which means it has a way to tell you if you bought from a dealer that qualifies you for the 4k tax credit. Turbo Tax sent me to "FIX MY RETURN"  and right after I fixed it which meant deleting it, l filed and boom within 10 mins it was "ACCEPTED". So if you filed for an EV and tried claiming the credit without actually purchasing it via dealer, you will have a hold up. Hope this helps
