Slow down.    You cannot amend a tax return that was just accepted.   You have to wait for it to be processed by the IRS.  Trying to send in an amended return while they are still processing the original return could confuse things and delay your refund for months.

Do not try to change anything on your return now.  When you amend, your Form 1040X has to be prepared from the return exactly the way it looked when you filed it originally.   You have to wait.   Once your return has been processed you will complete a Form 1040X   --- which is not yet available --- and submit it to amend the mistakes made when you filed your original return. It takes the IRS at least four months to process an amended return.

The 2020 Form 1040X does not become available until the end of March 2021 (subject to change).

IRS Letter 12C is normally sent to reconcile payment owed on a premium health care plan.  If you did not have health care and filed that you had healthcare with the marketplace, then the IRS will normally contact you and resolve this without having to file an amend.

Your best option would be to call the IRS and see what needs to be done to resolve your issue.

Here is the number and the quickest way to get to talk to a person:

Call them at 1-800-829-1040.  They are open Mon - Fri from 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM.  The best time to reach them is 8:00 AM your time.

Get to a live person fastest: Press 1 for English, then press 2 for Personal Income Taxes, and then push 1, then 3, then 2, then 0# when it asks for your social security number, then 2.

I filed my boyfriends return and my return the same day. I put on both of ours that our son was born, but that I was not claiming him and my boyfriend was. a few days later, my return got accepted but my boyfriends got denied. the reason was that somehow my return claimed my our son on eic but not as a dependent. I need to amend my return so that I can remove our son from mine and my boyfriend can claim our son.

Even if you amend your return, after your original return is finished being fully processed at IRS, and your boyfriend files his return, then, since the ssn has already been used,  he will have to file a paper return to claim the child.

For additional information on how to amend your already filed return, after IRS has completed processing of your return, please refer to the following:

I need to amend my return because of the unemployment credit. Without amending I have to pay the federal 1600, with an amendment it would be 400 instead. Why should i pay more than have to wait months to get my money back. Why not allow me to amend so I dont get borked over anymore than I already am. Will I be able to amend by the 15th of april.

April 2, 2021

Because this is what the IRS says.  They will directly send you the refund.

If you have already filed, you do not need to file or amend unless the calculations make you newly eligible for additional federal credits and deductions that are not already included on the original tax return.

I need to amend because of the new tax credit which takes me from owing to giving me a small refund. Due to this there is no account information for the refund to be credited to. Also I am moving in a few weeks and I know that checks from the IRS will not be forwarded by the post office. What am I to do?

April 6, 2021

I am in the same situation and all I keep hearing is we are going to get it back sometime later. I need to claim the credit now so i can pay 461 instead of 1640 but no one hear understands that. If i am gonna get stuck paying the full amount i need to arrange a payment plan and can not wait for the last minute. I have to pay by april 15th or they are going to slap on late fees. They weaseled us into doing taxes early so we can get the stimulus and now look how we are screwed for filing early and the stimulus was a check instead off in my account. If I can not file an amendment before the 15th it will be the last time i use turbo tax. I bet as soon as i go make a payment plan they will make it amendable but i will be locked into paying the full amount. What a way to screw us during a pandemic. I have to use my 1400 stimulus plus some of my unemployment just to pay the state. really hoping federal becomes amendable or i am borked. I guess everyone feels i should just pay it all and then wait months to get a bit back. What a screwed up system.

I accidentally messed up a digit of the SS# of one of my dependents but because I have unemployment benefits allocated for on my return, turbotax wont let me fill out the 1040X form. My filing has been approved and processed by the IRS but I lost out on $700.00 because of this error. How long will it take until I will be able to fill out the correction form?

April 11, 2021

Since your return did have unemployment compensation, you will need to wait to amend your return.  There are some additional changes being made by the IRS.  Once they are implemented, you will be able to amend your return.

I am trying to amend my return for the $10,200 unemployment benefit reduction because it made me newly eligible for the EITC. I did not receive this on my original filing. Turbotax software lets me go through the amendment, but then when I get to the efile, it says returns already submitted...you have no returns eligible for e-filing. What am I doing wrong??

I am having the same problem. I need to amend my Certificate of Rend Paid because our property managers got the numbers wrong on it but I didn't notice until after I submitted my return. I have the correct one now. Does anyone know when I will be able to do that and if it is going to affect how soon I get my federal and state back? I know you have to mail in those separate so I am hoping that it wont affect anything.

For MN?

To obtain the refund, the taxpayer must have a CRP, Certificate of Rent Paid (CRP), for each rental unit lived in during the year. The taxpayer's landlord is required to deliver a completed CRP to the taxpayer no later than January 31st of each year.

You will need the CRP to determine your refund, if any, and you must include what is called a Form M1PR with the CRP when it is filed. These forms have to be printed and mailed in to:

Minnesota Property Tax Refund
St. Paul, MN 55145-0020

TurboTax will prepare the Form M1PR for you to print. Towards the end of the step-by-step interview for Minnesota you will reach the Other Forms You May Need screen. To have the M1PR prepared and made available for printing, make sure you check the Property Tax Refund (Form M1PR) check box on the Other Forms You May Need screen, then follow the prompts through the end of the interview.

You can also file your M1PR free of charge at the MN Dept. of Revenue Property Tax Refund site, and if you're a homeowner, you can e-file it through the MN DOR's Property Tax Refund Online Filing System.

Yeah so what happened was the one they sent me at first was the full rent amount that was paid and I didnt realize until after I submitted it that the number should have been cut in half and my boyfriend should have gotten a seperate CRP for his half. So I need to amend the amount of rent paid on my return, it should be cut in half.

Hello!

I made a mistake regarding my Roth IRA contributions. I've received my notice but cannot click the option to amend despite having completed the paperwork. The amount due is incorrect and due in a week. What are my options?

January 24, 2024

I see that an amendment can not be made to my 2023 federal return until it is processed by the IRS.....in March if that is correct.   I already had a printed voucher showing that I owe $115.   The original return said refund of $190.  Do I send that back with the voucher at the same time?  I see back and added a form SSA 1099 that I originally forgot when I submitted my return.  Thanks

@Sahara17 If you are issued a refund from the original tax return, you keep the refund.

When completing your amended return the amount of the refund you received will be included on the Form 1040-X.  If your amended returns shows that you have taxes owed, you only pay those taxes.

The IRS Form 1040-X for tax year 2023 is scheduled to be available in TurboTax on 02/14/2024.

You will have to wait for the IRS to either Accept or Reject your filed federal tax return.
If the return is rejected you can make the necessary changes and e-file again.
If the return is accepted you will have to amend your original tax return. An amended return, Form 1040-X, can only be printed and mailed to the IRS if the original tax return was not e-filed. The IRS will take up to 20 weeks or longer to process an amended tax return.

Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS.
