Question

Will I still get my initial refund if I had to amend? Updated my 1095a and I owe $300, will the $300 be subtracted from the return or is it taking that into account?

When you amend your return you are required to enter the tax refund you received or should have received from the IRS on Line 18 of the Form 1040X.  Did you do that?

Not unless TurboTax updated that for me. Checking on that now.

1040X says I owe $300, and 1040 says I will get 781 back (instead of 1081). Sounds like it adjusted itself, just trying to make sure I don't ned to mail in a check just for it to get refunded back to me?

Then you need to pay the $300 with the mailed amended tax return.  The tax refund from your original tax return should have been $781 and not the $1,081 originally reported.

Sorry if the questions are a little redundant, just trying to figure it all out. Is it assuming that I already received the $1081 refund check and wants the $300 that would have been overpayed if I had received it? I haven't received a federal refund check yet, so I'm hesitant to send in money when I'm still owed money. Thanks for all your help so far! It is greatly appreciated!

It would be in your best interest to wait for the federal tax refund before mailing the amended return.  The IRS could change the amount of refund you receive so it is best to wait so you are entering the correct amount on the amended return.

Amended returns have to be printed and filed by mail.  It can take the IRS up to 12 weeks or longer to process them.   If you are due a larger refund than on your original return, your amended return should only show the difference and you will receive a separate check for it.  If you owe money on your amended return, it will show only the new amount owed, you will have to mail a check with the return.
