Last year I was working for a company full time. A friend of mine asked me if I wanted to try something different to see if I would like it. I did 1 job for him and loved it, so I quit my full time and went to work for them. So I rec'd a W2 from former company, W2 from new company and a 1099-NEC for the 1 time job that I did for them. I am now being asked questions on turbo tax 1099-NEC & Schedule C that need to be filled out. I am not an independent contractor I just did 1 job for him. Confused as what to do. Can anyone help me on this?

It actually does sound like you were an independent contractor during the period between your W-2 jobs..

You're generally considered an independent contractor and self-employed when you've received a Form 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC for work you've done, and the payments you received didn't include FICA deductions.

Please see the TurboTax Help article Am I an employee or an independent contractor? for more information.

To enter information from your Form 1099-NEC in TurboTax Online:

    1. If you don’t see 2022 TAXES in the left pane, select the dropdown to the right of Income & Expenses on the Hi, let’s keep working on your taxes! page and then select Let’s get startedPick up where you left off, or Review/Edit.
      • Otherwise, in the left pane, select Wages & Income
    2. Scroll down and select the Show more dropdown to the right of Other Common Income
    3. Select  Start or Revisit to the right of Form 1099-NEC
    4. Answer  Yes to the question, Did you get a 1099-NEC?
    5. Select  Continue

From here, you can input/delete/edit any information necessary.
