Question

Allocating Income to NYC

In 2024 I worked for a New York State company for the full year but only lived in New York State and NYC for half of the year. So on form IT360, I need to allocate only a portion of my income to NYC. When I do this, my refund shows up as expected. But when I return to my full review/prepare to file, that cell in form IT360 returns to the full amount of my income. Any advice? I have already paid TT fees for my federal and two state returns. Thanks!

NY uses your full year of income and prorates it to determine your NY tax.  If it is simply the tax calculation, it would be right. Look down at your allocations and check that those numbers are correct.

If there is a problem, reply which line on which form you think is wrong and any additional help.

Hi Amy— thank you! I think my question wasn’t clear. In 2024 I worked for a NY company the full year and so owe NY STATE taxes for the full year. But I moved out of NY CITY half way through the year and so only owe NY City taxes for part of the year. I was struggling to figure out how/what to input to reflect the fact that 100% of my income is allocable to NY state but only half is allocable to NY city.

As you go through the NY state screens, you'll be asked about your residency for NYC. Choose that you were a part-year resident and enter the dates of residency.
