Question

As of January 2020 I am self employed and only have a W-9 form; do I need to file for taxes right now? I’ve also never worked prior to 2020 and do not have a W-2 form.

No. A W-9 form is what a client provides independent contractors. It should be returned to the client so that at the end of 2020, you will receive Form 1099-MISC.

For 2019, there is no filing requirement if you did not receive any earned or unearned income.

For 2020, keep track of your income and expenses systematically. It will make it easier at tax time.
