Question

Can I enter text for an explanation on line 8z of schedule 1, other than what TurboTax automatically populates?

After calling the IRS, they advised me to enter a specific text for explanation on this line. This is on an amendment. Is there a way to get to "forms", so that I can enter my own text?

Here's how to enter "other income" in TurboTax so that it will be reported on Schedule 1 line 8z with a description that you enter. You don't have to "get to forms." You can do this in the question-and-answer interview in TurboTax Online.

  • In the Search box type "lawsuit settlement" (without the quotes), then click the link that says "Jump to lawsuit settlement." It doesn't matter if that's not what the income was actually for. This is the only search term I could find that gets you to the right place.
  • The first screen asks, "Any Other Taxable Income?" Click Yes.
  • On the next screen, "Other Taxable Income," enter your description (keep it short) and enter the amount. Click Continue.
  • On the next screen click Done.
  • You will get a few more screens with unrelated questions. If they don't apply to you, just answer No and click Continue.

You can enter an explanation for an entry on line 8(z) of Schedule 1 on your amended return. You need to use the Forms option (see the icon on top right of your screen) and pull up 1040/1040SR Wks (1st entry in the list) and scroll down to Schedule I,  line 8(z). Next, click on the number box entry for line 8(z) and use the magnifying glass icon to bring up Schedule 1, line 8 Other Income Statement. Scroll down to line 12 where you can enter a description and amount for your income entry.

Unfortunately, the "forms" icon is not available on my screen. I think it may be due to the fact that this is an amendment. The original return was already filed and accepted. 😞 I appreciate your response!
