can i remove the standard deduction for my minor

    No, in the minor's separate return, there is no reason to remove the Standard Deduction, and doing so would cause them to owe more tax than necessary.  Instead, they will indicate that they can be claimed as a dependent on someone else's return.  

     

    On your return, your standard deduction will not change whether or not you have a dependent. 

     

    Here is what to do in the minor's tax return in TurboTax Online to indicate the parents are claiming the child:

     

    Navigate to My Info, Personal Profile, select "revisit" under their name. 

     

    • Continue through the interview until you get to the page "Let's check for some other situations" and choose "Another taxpayer can claim me as a dependent on their tax return" and answer "Will this person claim you on their 2024 tax return?" with "Yes."
