Can I see how I got $500 from schedule 3 line 8?

I received a letter from the IRS asking me how I got $500 on line 20 of my 1040sr.

Form 1040 Schedule 3 Line 8 is the total of lines 1 thru 5 and line 7. Which line on the Schedule 3, Lines 1 thru 5 or Line 7, have an amount entered?

First, thank you so much for your reply. I've learned a little since my first post.

On schedule 3 I entered $500 on line 5. That transferred to line 8.

Line 5 came from form 5695line 30. We installed Hurricane double sliders that came to $6434 but the most that we can deduct is $500.

I have form 5695 printed but maybe I failed to send it in or do you think they want a receipt from the doors?

@janissteve If the 2021 federal tax return was mailed to the IRS then either the Form 5695 was not included or the IRS has misplaced the form.

Send a copy of the Form 5695 to the IRS using the procedure noted in the IRS notice. Do not provide a receipt unless requested by the IRS.
