changing from SSN to EIN for a sole proprietor/freelancer

Hi,

I have what might be a dumb question. I'm a first-time freelancer, and gave a client my SSN via W9 when I started working with them. I only just realized that I can use an EIN instead. Can I just ask my client to change from SSN to EIN in their records? Will the income I've already earned stay on record as belonging to my SSN? I know the EIN is more secure, but I also want to start a solo 401K, which you need an EIN for, so I'm wondering if my previous income would be eligible or not.

Thanks!

Can I just ask my client to change from SSN to EIN in their records?   Sure ... fill in a new W-9 for them and ask if they will put all the payments at the end of the year under the EIN.  If they will not then you will simply get 2 1099 forms next Jan which is put on the same Sch C.
