converting long term rental to short term - expenses prior

I incurred various expenses (mostly starting to accumulate furniture) in preparation to convert a long term rental home into a short term one. Can those be added as normal rental expenses the same way I would enter them for the long term rental?

The kicker to that, which might be relevant, is we ended up deciding to sell the house when the long term renters moved out. Would this change the answer to the above question because the expenses were never actually used in the rental?

If you never used the items you purchased for short-term rental purposes, they would not be deductible.
