I received spiff money for sales and got a 1099-NEC but I don't own a small business.

No. You don’t have to enter business info for your SPIFF payment.

Tax Champ @Hal_Al says SPIFFs are not considered to be self-employment income. They are taxable.

In Turbo:

  1. Type 1099-nec in Search (magnifying glass) in the top right
  2. Select Jump to 1099-nec
  3. On "1099-NEC Summary," delete your SPIFF (trash can)
  4. Tap +Add Another 1099-NEC and re-enter your 1099-NEC
  5. On “Does one of these uncommon situations apply?” choose This in not money earned as an employee or self-employed individual, it is from a sporadic activity or hobby (this is not common), then Continue.

This will put your SPIFF payment on Schedule 1, line 21 as Other Income.
