Question

form 1099-nec

I received a 1099-NEC for some freelance work I performed. The employer supplied a TIN number (Tax Identification Number) on the form. However, Turbo Tax wants an EIN number (Employer Identification Number). The Turbo Tax tax review keeps asking for a EIN number on the 1099-NEC worksheet. The income does show up on my Schedule C.

How should I address this?

A Federal Tax Identification Number, also known as a "E.I.N. Number," or "Tax I.D. Number", all refer to the nine digit number issued by the IRS. They are different names for the same number.

Please go back to your 1099-NEC input and double-check the identification number inputted, as well as the format selected.

To do so, please follow the instructions below:

    1. Open your return.
    2. Search for 1099-NEC with the magnifying glass tool at the top of the page.
    3. Click on the Jump to 1099-NEC link at the top of the search results.
    4. Click Edit next to your 1099-NEC.
    5. Confirm format and accuracy of the identification number.
