After you enter your 1099-R, there will be follow-up questions about your distribution.  In those follow-up questions, you will be asked where the distribution is from.   TurboTax will use the information you provide during the 1099-R follow-up questions to apply the deductions on your Indiana state return.   Make sure you choose the correct Form Type (CSA or CSF for civil service forms) when entering your 1099-R.

  • Military retirement and/or survivor’s benefits:   Taxpayers with military retirement income and/or survivor benefits are eligible to take this deduction.  For 2022 and later, the deduction is equal to the entire amount of retirement or survivor benefits.  A military retirement income statement must be enclosed with the tax return.
  • Civil service annuity deduction:    Deduct up to $16,000 for federal civil service annuity payments if the annuitant is at least age 62 by the end of the tax year.   Each spouse can deduct up to $16,000 if eligible.
