Question

I received a 1099-NEC as a retention bonus for teaching. I am not self employed. I do not need a Schedule C but turbo tax is trying to create one. Help?

Generally, income from a 1099-MISC form is considered self-employment income but here are the instructions to enter the form so it is not included in self-employment income. First you can delete the 1099-MISC form that you already entered and then enter it again.

1. Launch TurboTax and select Wages and Income

2. Scroll down to Other Common Income and select Edit

3. Select the trash can that is next to the 1099-MISC form that you already entered to delete it

Next, you will enter the 1099-MISC as other income

4. Select Add Form

5. Enter your 1099-MISC and select Continue

6. Enter Retention Bonus for the description and Continue

7. Select None of these apply on the next screen

8. Select only the tax year for this 1099-MISC and Continue

9. Select No, it didn’t involve an intent to earn money and Continue.
