Question

In the review phase for my online tax form, I said "yes" to Specified Service Trade or Business (SSTB), triggering the SSTB reduction to QBI. How do I change to "no"?

The Qualified Business Income Component Worksheet checks a box on line 9. I believe I set this in error and my sole proprietorship  is not an SSTB, but do not see how to fix this. I am using the online version and do not want to use the desktop version of TurboTax to fix this via modifying forms.

You can review your answers to the QBI deduction questions in TurboTax Online by following these steps:

  1. Open or continue your return in TurboTax
  2. Search for self employed income (use this exact phrase, don't add a hyphen) and select the Jump to link at the top of the search results
  3. Click Edit next to the line of work you need to change
  4. On the Here's your XXX info screen scroll down to the Business Summary section and click Details for Qualified Business Income
  5. Proceed through the interview and change the SSTB question to No

Unfortunately this did not work. I do find the "jump to self employed income" link, and get my self-employed work summary. However, when I click edit, and go to the "Here's your XXX info" screen, there is no Business Summary section.  I am using turbotax Deluxe online. On the screen, there are edit buttons for the different 1099-NECs I have created, the option to "Add income for this work", the option to "Add expenses for this work", and an Edit button for "Carryovers, limitations, at risk information, etc.". Opening any of these does not provide any way to go through the interview.  The only way I can see that SSTB entries are in my tax return is by downloading the pdf of the forms. Note, I did not select SSTB from this screen -- it came up as one of the items for review when I performed "Check my Return". Thank you.

Now that you have been through that section, try those steps again.  The QBI should be right below the Carryovers, Limits, and At-risk section, see the image below.   However, if you still don't see it, you can click on Done at the bottom of that screen.     The next screen should show your taxable business income, click on Continue and the next questions should be the QBI questions.    The first is about the amount of income that was earned in the US, then about a former employer, and then about other adjustments to taxable income.    If your taxable income is not at a certain level, the SSBT classification doesn't matter and isn't asked about.   That link lists the triggering amounts.

While it is a far from ideal solution the best course of action for you at this point is to delete the business information that you have entered and re-enter it selecting the non-SSTB options this time.
