Question

It keeps prompting me to review my 1099-INT info even though I've finished it. What should I do?

I am using the free version of turbotax, but it says I shouldn't have to upgrade unless I have a certain amount of interest for this account, which I do not. So I am confused as to why it won't accept what I have done for the 1099-INT section.

Is there any foreign interest with foreign tax withheld?  If during your 1099-INT entries you had to open up the less common area to make additional entries, then TurboTax may be asking you to upgrade due to an item in that section requiring a form not included in Free. If you had foreign tax paid in box 6, you would need the form 1116 to claim the foreign tax credit.  This form is not included with Free.

The other option is to delete the 1099-INT and re-enter the form.   After you have logged in and are in your return in TurboTax Online:

  • Go to Search at the top of the screen.
  • Enter Form 1099-INT in the search box.
  • You will see a Jump To function that will take you to the 1099-INT input screens.
  • There delete the 1099-INT in question by clicking on the trash can next to the form
  • Add a new 1099-INT and manually enter your form.

This was super helpful, thank you! It doesn't say Needs Review anymore. however, it does still say that I need to upgrade because my tax return isn't "simple", even though my interest is NOT above $1500. Can you please advise? Thank you so much.

It is possible your situation is more complex than you thought and required an upgrade.

Whether you are a returned or new customer, some of the tax forms are not supported in the TurboTax Free Edition this year.  Especially with Tax Cut and Job Acts TCJA and CARES Act, there are many new forms required to claim the same deductions, credits, or forms of income. Some of the situations have been transformed into TurboTax Deluxe and TurboTax Live Deluxe, instead of in Free Edition.

There is another option for you.  It's called the Tax Freedom which is an IRS Free File Program delivered by TurboTax.  It is exclusively available online and has its own dedicated website at taxfreedom.com.  It isn't accessible from the "regular" TurboTax.com website and is not the same as the TurboTax Free Edition.  For 2020, if your Adjusted Gross Income AGI is $39,000 or less, you may qualify.
