Question

oversight in dependent return causes reject of parent return

I have a 21 year old son who is a college student.  I use TurboTax to prepare and file both his and my returns.

When preparing my son's current return I neglected to check the box indicating that another taxpayer (myself) will claim him as a dependent.

I have always claimed this son as a dependent on my tax return, including my current return.

I attempted to e-file both mine and my son's tax returns.  My son's return, though prepared with an oversight (he was not claimed as my dependent) , was accepted.  My return was rejected because of the cross check for dependency between my and my son's returns.

How do I correct my son's return for the dependency oversight and clear my return for e-filing?

You will need to amend your son’s tax return but wait until it is processed. You will not be able to e-file your tax return; you will have to print and mail it because it will keep getting rejected.

Please review the TurboTax articles How to Correct Federal Tax Returns for more information and instructions.
