Question

paying taxes

I tried to register with the IRS for my sole proprietorship business and the EFTPS keeps rejecting my application. It says what I enter as my TIN doesn't match their IRS records.

Is this because I've never filed taxes for my business?  Tried calling them but after 2+ hours on hold, I gave up.

Thanks for joining us today,  Tigram Strategies!

That sounds very frustrating. A couple of things:

    • On the application it should be your business legal name if using EIN and your name if using a social security number.
    • Only use the legal name which is on the first line of the letter you received from the IRS containing your EIN.
    • Often the reason it was rejected is your entity is so new, the IRS has not yet updated your EIN in the system to verify. This process with the IRS takes 2-5 weeks from the date you requested your EIN.

Here is the EFTPS helpline, it says they open at 6am mon - fri EST. Call right when they open - fastest way to talk to a real person. EFTPS HELPLINE
