On the Schedule C where do I enter expenses for my business vehicle? I had repairs to the vehicle along with regular maintenance. Thanks

You can enter any maintenance and repairs on the vehicle expenses worksheet. Try using the steps below to get to the correct area.

To Enter Your Business Vehicle Maintenance:

1. Select "Business" at the top of the screen

2. Choose "Continue", then "I'll choose what I work on"

3. Select "Start" next to "Business Income and Expenses"

4. Select "Edit" next to your business name

5. Scroll down to Business Expenses

6. Now select "Start" next to "Business Vehicle Expense"

7. Select "Edit" next to your vehicle(or enter the information when asked to)

8. Continue until you arrive to the screen asking for mileage and make any changes

9. Continue answering the questions until you are asked "Do you want to see if your actual vehicle expenses give you a bigger deduction?", and answer "Yes"

10. On the next page you will see an area to enter expenses for maintenance/repairs

For all business vehicle deductions do you enter the total fuel, oil, maintenance prices or do you enter the total price and Turbo Tax figures out the percentage?

For vehicles used in your business you can either take mileage or actual expenses.

  • If you choose to take mileage, depreciation is taken into consideration in the mileage rate.
  • If you choose to take actual expenses, TurboTax will automatically calculate the deduction and include it with the other vehicle expenses.  To find the depreciation amount, just subtract the expenses you entered from the total expense displayed.

As you go through the interview, TurboTax will first calculate the standard mileage deduction and then ask if you would like to see if actual expenses would give a higher deduction.  You will have the opportunity to enter the expenses (gas, tires, etc.) and TurboTax will add these along with the depreciation and give you a comparison.
