Question

Why do I need a Schedule C Form 1040 for 1099-MISC paid by my university?

Hi,

I am a grad student who received a Form 1099-MISC for a fellowship I earned. My university provided this form. I entered the information as suggested here: https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/import-export-data-files/enter-1099-misc/L7mAQke3m_US_en_US?uid=m88o0cv4

But running the Smart Check required me to complete a Schedule C. I am unsure how to proceed, because I would not say I am a business.

Thank you for your guidance

Please go back through the interview for that 1099-MISC and answer the questions this way:

    Enter the 1099-MISC Under
    Wages & Income
    Other Common Income
    Income from Form 1099-MISC    START
Enter the 1099-MISC as it was reported, Type "Fellowship" in for the description, Select "None of these apply" for uncommon situations,

    "NO" not like main job,

    only got it in 2024,

"NO" no intent to earn money,

    DONE
These are TurboTax questions, not IRS questions. These need to be the answers to let TurboTax know it is not Self-Employment.

If you continue to have an issue, you may need to delete and re-enter the 1099-MISC
