Question

Will I need to file taxes even though I made under $14,000?

This is my first ever time getting a tax form and filing taxes. But I my mom keeps telling me that I don’t need to file taxes because I made under $14,000. I have no idea what to do, and I just don’t want to stir up any trouble

If you were an employee and received a Form w-2 and your gross income was less than $14,600 you do not have to file a tax return.  However, if you had taxes withheld from your wages you should file a tax return to get a refund of those taxes withheld.

If you do file a tax return and you are being claimed as a dependent on your parent's tax return, the make sure on your tax return that you indicate that you can be claimed as a dependent.

Awesome! Thank you so much!! And how would I know if I have any taxes withheld from my wages?

Look at your W-2.  In box 2 of the W-2 if there is an amount entered that is the total of the federal taxes withheld from your wages.  If there is nothing in box 2, then no federal taxes were withheld.

One thing to consider, if you do have to file to get a refund of Federal or State taxes paid, is to consider marking your W-4 as EXEMPT,  if you will make below the filing threshold for  2025.

This is often used for students who work or have paid internships.  Doing so keeps you from having to file to get the refund.
